80th Annual Meeting of the Society for Military History “War, Society, and Remembrance”

New Orleans, Louisiana

The Society for Military History is pleased to call for papers for its 80th Annual Meeting, hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for the Study of War and Society, the National World War II Museum, and Southeastern Louisiana University.

The year 2013 marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Society for Military History, as well as the continuing anniversaries of the Second World War (70th), the American Civil War (150th), and the War of 1812 (200th). The Center for the Study of War & Society at the University Southern Mississippi, the National WWII Museum, and Southeastern Louisiana University invite papers that examine societies at war and the remembrance of conflict. We particularly encourage papers that reflect on these historic anniversaries. As per tradition, the program committee will also consider all panel and paper proposals dealing with significant questions in the field of war and society/military history.

Panel proposals must include a panel title, an abstract summarizing the theme of the panel (one page maximum), abstracts for each paper proposed (all one page maximum), one page curricula vitae for each panelist (including the chair and commentator), and panelist contact information. Submissions of pre-organized panels are strongly encouraged and will be given preference in the selection process. Individual paper proposals are also welcome and should include a one-page abstract of the paper, one-page vita, and contact information. If accepted, individual papers will be assigned by the program committee to an appropriate panel with a chair and a commentator.

All presenters, chairs, and commentators must be members of the Society for Military History by December 31, 2012. All proposals must be submitted electronically (as PDFs) to the program committee coordinator, Kyle Zelner (Email)

To encourage wider membership involvement, participants may present one paper, serve on a roundtable, or provide panel comments; members may not fill more than one of these roles during the conference. Members who act as panel chairs only for a session may deliver a paper, serve on a roundtable, or offer comments in a different session; members who serve as chair and commentator of a session may not present in another session.

Deadline for proposals is 1 October 2012.

The meeting will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans Downtown, on the edge of the French Quarter in the heart of New Orleans. It is easily accessible by hotel shuttle and cab from the Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY). The conference will close with a reception and banquet at the nearby National World War II Museum.
